Bleeding is the most common complication of peptic ulcer disease, and peptic ulcer is the most common source of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Risk of bleeding is unrelated to duration of ulcer disease. Hemorrhage results from erosion of the ulcer into a blood vessel. The most common sign of acute bleeding is melena, with or without hematemesis. Major blood loss (>1500ml) can result in circular failure. The ulcer pain may be relieved after bleeding.
