Explanation
Diazoxide works by causing the muscle in the walls of the blood vessels (arteries) to relax. This allows the arteries to widen rapidly and reduces blood pressure.
Diazoxide injection is mainly used for the short-term, emergency treatment of very high blood pressure (hypertensive crisis) associated with brain disorder, heart failure, liver or kidney disease or pregnancy. It is also used to reduce extremely high blood pressure caused by kidney disease and in cases where other medicines have not been effective. It is not suitable for long term treatment of high blood pressure as it increases blood sugar levels.
Diazoxide injection is also used to reduce the blood pressure in hypertensive patients who are about to undergo invasive diagnostic procedures such as a kidney biopsy. This reduces the risk of bleeding.
