Peritonsillar abscess or quinsy is localization of pus in the space between the tonsil capsule and the superior constrictor muscles of the pharynx. There is pronounced unilateral peritonsillar swelling and erythema and soft palate bulge medially and the uvula deviates away from the abscess. Oral anaerobes also play a role in quinsy. Patients have a severe sore throat and speak with a "hot-potato" voice. Examination reveals causing deviation of the uvula. Immediate aspiration/Excision and Drainage is required in conjunction with antibiotic therapy. Ampicillin/Sulbactam (3 g intravenously every 6 h), penicillin plus metronidazole, or clindamycin. Tonsillectomy can be done 6 weeks later.
