The basic pattern of breathing is set by the activity of neurons in the reticular formation of the medulla and pons. The medulla sets respiratory rhythm. Function of pons in respiration is less well-understood, but if connections between pons and medulla are cut, breathing becomes abnormal: While still rhythmic, it occurs in gasps.
Inspiratory Center (dorsal respiratory group or DRG) is the pace-setting nucleus in the medulla oblongata. Neurons are called medullary inspiratory neurons. Complete suppression of inspiratory neurons by overdose of sleeping pills, morphine, or alcohol can stop respiration completely.
Respiratory Center: generates the basic rhythm of respiration.
