Spinal injuries can result from falls, shallow water diving, motor vehicle accidents and assault to name a few. Specific mechanisms are axial loading, excessive flexion or hyperextension, hyper-rotation, sudden or excessive lateral bending, and distraction (over-elongation). Any one of these actions alone can cause significant damage, but keep in mind that the mechanism of injury may involve more than one of these actions, resulting in additional damage. Signs and symptoms of spinal injury include:
- Significant mechanism of injury
- Midline tenderness on palpation of neck/back
- Deformity
- Paralysis/paresis
- Guarding or self-splinting of neck/back
- Numbness/tingling in extremities
- Neurological deficits
- Signs and symptoms of neurogenic shock
- Priapism in males
- Autonomic hyperreflexia is a sudden increase in blood pressure associated with certain kinds of spinal cord injury.
