An incidence rate is found by dividing the number of newly diagnosed cases in a period of time by the number of persons in the population who are at risk of getting the illness. If we assume that the 200 students who had the illness at the outset of the study are not at risk of getting the illness, that leaves 150 new cases among the 1000 remaining students.
