The reason that the extra-intestinal pathway is used is because propagated signals within the enteric nervous system are slow and subject to interruption.
Enteric mechanoreceptors send fibers to the prevertebral ganglia where Ach release excites (fast EPSPs via nicotinic cholinergic receptors) sympathetic fibers, initiating a local reflex. Similar sympathetic transmission pathways are used to communicate between proximal to distal regions of the intestine.
The fast EPSP doesn't involve K+ channels.
