Pregnancy-related ITP, by definition, affects only the platelets. Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, which is caused by a variety of disorders, is an RBC fragmentation syndrome resulting from fibrin deposition in partially thrombosed microvasculature. RBCs are caught on the thin fibrin strands, and fragmentation of RBCs into various sizes and shapes results. Preeclampsia/eclampsia, HELLP, and postpartum HUS can give rise to microangiopathic hemolytic anemia.
