DPseudomonas aeruginosa is the predominant pathogen associated with otitis externa. Occasionally P. aeruginosa may penetrate the epithelium of the floor of the external auditory canal & invade the underlying soft tissue, cartilage & cortical bone. This condition is called malignant otitis externa & occurs predominately in elderly diabetics. Virtually all cases of malignant otitis externa are caused by P. aeruginosa.
