BNew spongy bone is laid down around the footplate of the stapes which impedes its ability to move freely in the oval window. This causes a conductive deafness which gets worse as the disease process develops.
Examination is normally normal although in very active disease it may be possible to see a pink hue to the drum, from very vascular spongy bone deposits on the medial wall of the middle ear. (Schwarze's sign).
