The Correct Answer is B
- Normal portal pressure = 5 - 10 mmHg
- Portal hypertension is defined as a pressure > 12 mmHg
Portal Hypertension—Cirrhosis of the liver can obstruct the portal vein. This causes pressure to rise in this vein and its tributaries. Portal hypertension produces enlarged varicose veins in sites of anastamoses between portal and systemic veins. The veins may become so dilated that their walls rupture and hemorrhage occurs. Dilated veins (varices) of the esophagus is severe and can be fatal. Varices can also occur at the umbilicus, resulting in veins that look like snakes radiating around the umbilicus. This is called caput medusae because the pattern looks like the serpents on the head of Medusa, a Greek mythological character.
