  • Sx:
    • dysphagia (if tumor >5cm; tumor grows in the muscular wall and the overlying mucosa is intact)
  • Dx:
    • Hx of dysphagia
    • Barium swallow- localized smooth filling defect in esophageal wall
    • Esophagoscopy – confirm dx
    • Biopsy is CONTRAINDICATED because it violates the mucosa, making subsequent surgical therapy difficult
  • Surgical Tx:
    • Symptomatic patients: tumor is enucleated from esophageal wall w/o violating mucosa
    • Limited esophageal resection is indicated if tumor lies in lower esophagus and cannot be enucleated.
