The activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) is used for the same purposes as the ACT, which is to evaluate the intrinsic and common pathways. The Prothrombin Time (PT) is sensitive to a reduction in three of four Vitamin K- dependent procoagulant proteins (VII from the tissue factor pathway and factors X and II from the common pathway). The APTT measures the activity of all factors except VII. However, the test is most sensitive to factors in the intrinsic pathway: factors XI, IX, and VIII and those of the contact system, XII, Prekallikrein, and the contact system cofactor, High Molecular Weight Kininogen (HMWK).
