Melanosis coli is a benign pigmentation of the colonic mucosa which occurs in association with longstanding use of anthraquinone laxatives such as cascara, senna and aloe. It is reversible when exposure to these laxatives is stopped. Magnesium citrate is a saline laxative whereas bisacodyl and phenolphthalein belong to the diphenylmethane family which does not produce melanosis.
