The pectoralis major muscle can be used for reconstruction but the medial and lateral pectoral nerves are named from their respective cords of the brachial plexus. The serratus anterior muscle holds the scapula to the chest wall and its absence produces the functional and cosmetically disabling winged scapula. The serratus posterior muscle is attached to the 7th cervical and first three thoracic vertebrae posteriorly and functions as an accessory muscle of respiration. The constancy of the vascular pedicle to the latissimus dorsi and its size allow this muscle to be used to reconstruct defects of the head, neck, chest wall and pleural cavity. It is innervated by the thoracodorsal nerve with fibers from C6, C7 and C8.
