The role of the venous system of the lower extremities is to make sure blood flows back to the heart, whatever the position of the body, whether resting or moving. It also acts as a reservoir for the blood mass, as well as a regulator for the cardiac output and body temperature.
Veins differ from arteries in three ways: their walls are thinner and contain little elastic fiber, and their internal diameter is greater. These structural properties make them able to stretch outward with ease and thereby adapt them to their function as a reservoir for blood.
