Firearms and ready access to firearms are closely associated with suicide and an increased risk of attempted suicide. The elderly have the highest rates of suicide, although the greatest total number of suicides occurs in the under 40 age group. Men are three to five times more likely to commit suicide than are women. Alcoholism and depression are the most common mental illnesses associated with suicide. There is evidence that media coverage of the suicides of others can precipitate more teen and young adult suicides.
