Gonorrhoea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a Gram-negative diplococcus. The infection can be treated with a single course of high-dose penicillin but the increasing incidence of penicillin-resistant strains outside the UK dictate the use of non-penicillin antimicrobials, such as ciprofloxacin, spectinomycin and ceftriaxone, in cases acquired overseas. Gonorrhoea is a leading cause of pelvic inflammatory disease, which can lead to tubal infertility. Nevertheless, gonococcal infection in women is asymptomatic in up to 50% of cases, underscoring the importance of actively screening for this infection .
