The catecholamines are, epinerphrine and norepinephrine. They are stored in vessicles that are released by exocytosis that is calcium dependent. The vesicles contain ATP, chromagranin and the catecholamines. These catecholamines are synthesized from tyrosine. The conversion of tyrosine to DOPA occurs in the cytoplasm of the chromaffin cells and is catalyzed by tyrosine hydroxylase. Then the DOPA is actively transported into the vesicle where it is converted to norepinepherine. Norepinepherine is transported back to the cytoplasm, and converted to epinepherine by the enzyme PNMT.
