After fixation, the umbilical vessels of the umb. cord appear empty, but more accurately is representative of the situation in vivo, when the vessels are not emptied of blood. The two arteries are smaller in diameter than the vein. When fixed in their normally distended state, the umbilical arteries exhibit transverse intimal folds (valves) of Hoboken across part of their lumens (Chacko and Reynolds, 1954).
