Since the first case of AIDS in the South-East Asia Region (SEAR) of World Health Organization (WHO) was reported from Thailand in 1984, the AIDS epidemic has spread rapidly in the Region with serious adverse consequences on the health and socioeconomic status of the countries. This Region has now the second largest number of HIV-infected persons in the world, the largest number being in Sub-Saharan Africa.
